What Science Has to Say About The Chronically Late

There are people who tend to be late for almost every meeting, deadline, or time set with them. Sometimes they do it simply because that's what they're used to, and sometimes they fail to properly manage their schedule so they won't be late. It takes a lot of patience when dealing with people who are consistently late, and sometimes it's very hard for us to understand them. However, it's important to understand that usually these are not procrastinating or uncaring people, but rather people who simply believe they can accomplish a lot in little time, and there are 8 positive things that science says about them that we all need to know.

1. They are really good at multitasking

People who tend to be late often try to accomplish as much as possible in a short time, and they are usually quite good at doing several things simultaneously. It's unlikely you'll see them finish one task before starting another. Instead, they try to perform multiple tasks at once, but unfortunately, this often causes them to miss deadlines. Their performance at school or work can be quite good overall, but they struggle when it comes to meeting deadlines.

2. They seek thrills

They may not admit it right away, but people who tend to be late also tend to seek more thrills in life. The feeling of almost missing a deadline or being late for a meeting excites them, whether consciously or not. This might sound negative, but that adrenaline rush helps them act and move, even when they arrive late. Notice that they always have a smile on their face – their body responds positively to this excitement.

3. Time plays a different role for them

People who are late lack a sense of time. They might say, "I'll be there in 5 minutes," and they truly believe it, but in reality, it might be a 20-minute trip. Therefore, if you're making plans with such people, it's advisable to set a slightly earlier time, and if they say they'll arrive in just a few minutes, you can be almost certain it will take them a bit longer than they claim.

4. They are more optimistic

The optimism of late people even has research backing. They don't suffer from stress like others, even when they're late, because they believe they can get everything done on time, simply because they have a tendency for positive thinking. This, of course, doesn't justify their tardiness, but it does mean they are less pessimistic, which is a positive trait many of us would like to adopt.

5. They are more creative

People who tend to be late also tend to have more creative thinking. They find new ways to complete tasks, possibly because of their tendency to be late. Many people with attention deficit disorders tend to be late because their minds are full of thoughts, and different ideas keep flowing to them nonstop. This makes it hard for them to finish one task, as they think about all the different ways they could do it.

6. They often succeed more later in life

Being late isn't particularly helpful in life, especially in academic settings with strict schedules. While this point doesn't apply to every person who is late, if late people do something good in their lives, it’s likely to be something big and very successful. Many of them become successful later in life compared to people who tend to "follow the rules" and arrive on time. They might be ambitious but have no issue taking their time and succeeding later.

7. They have high self-confidence

People who tend to be late are very confident in themselves. Even when they realize they have a tendency to be late, they are still confident they will manage to arrive and complete tasks on time without making significant changes to enable this. They are aware of their habits but confident they can handle them, and although they fail many times, it won't make them feel down or beat themselves up over it.

8. They may live longer

Remember the point about chronic latecomers being more optimistic? Well, a study conducted at Harvard University showed a connection between optimism and lower blood pressure and heart health, as it helps maintain a healthy heart and normal blood pressure. Stress, on the other hand, does the opposite, so theoretically, people who tend to be late might live longer than others. Their lack of worry helps them in this regard.

People who are late are not bad people

From everything you've read here, one thing should be clear – people who are late are not bad people. They don't do it on purpose, and they genuinely try to do their best. Whether they are friends, family, or colleagues, it's important to know that those who tend to be late are simply not bad people; they are just who they are.

They might suffer from attention deficit disorders, they might simply never have learned how to manage their schedules properly, or they might be perfectionists who find it hard to complete tasks and be satisfied with the results within a set time. Either way, there are many advantages they gain from their tendency to be late, and we hope the things you learned here helped you understand them a bit better.
