Audrey Hepburn is one of the most beloved film stars of the twentieth century. Hepburn is also known for her style, sophistication, and charm off-screen. The Belgian-born star never lost sight of where she came from, or of her desire to give back. Hepburn was 11 years old and studied at the Arnhem Conservatory in the Netherlands when the Germans invaded the country. She and her mother fled to a nearby town and soon began supporting the Dutch resistance. Years later, the actress recalled that the hardship during the war was so great and her family was so hungry that they ate tulip bulbs.
After the war, Hepburn went on to study ballet in London. Her first major role was in a Broadway production of Gigi in 1951. It was soon followed by memorable big-screen roles in movies like Roman Holiday, Sabrina, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But even with 31 film credits and an Academy Award to her name, Hepburn always considered her greatest role to be a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Upon her passing in 1993, her sons set up the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund to honor and continue their mother’s important humanitarian work.
