How to Treat Hemorrhoids the Natural Way

Contrary to what many think, hemorrhoids is not just the name of a pathological condition. These are anatomical structures that contain connective tissue and blood vessels, whose role is to help the body control the sealing of the anus - when they swell and become inflamed, we suffer from the condition we all know as "hemorrhoids". More than 75% of the population experiences this distressing condition at one time or another, usually between the ages of 45-65, and it may also appear during pregnancy and is mainly common among people who exert a lot of effort while sitting on the toilet. In this article you will find out what are the causes of the problem, what are its symptoms, how to alleviate it in natural ways as well as other ways to deal with its symptoms.

What causes hemorrhoids?

There are many causes of hemorrhoids, and they may appear in both men and women, these are the main causes:

Constipation - one of the leading causes of hemorrhoids is constipation, since the tightening of the muscles of the anus increases the pressure exerted on the veins in it.

Pregnancy - Hemorrhoids are a very common problem among pregnant women, and this is due to the hormonal changes they experience and the increased pressure exerted on the anus due to the growing fetus, which forces the veins to work harder for blood flow.

Chronic venous insufficiency - hemorrhoids can be a symptom of weakness of the veins. Factors that promote the outbreak of hemorrhoids in people who suffer from chronic venous insufficiency are standing or sitting for long periods of time, being overweight, not maintaining physical fitness and smoking.

Inflammatory bowel diseases - gastric colitis and Crohn's may cause those who suffer from them to also experience hemorrhoids from time to time.

Portal hypertension - this is an increase in blood pressure in the portal vein of the liver, between the intestines and the liver. This happens mainly among people who suffer from cirrhosis of the liver.

Age - from the beginning of our 30s, there is a gradual weakening of the structural support of the anus, which encourages the development of hemorrhoids.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids often result in bleeding without pain, which becomes apparent after using the toilet. However, blood in stool might indicate a severe problem, and it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately. Moreover, bloating may cause a feeling of wanting to pass stool even when it is not present in the body, and exerting pressure on the anus can exacerbate the situation.

Hemorrhoids outside the anus or blood vessel blockage might cause severe pain, itching, and discomfort. Painful bumps or swelling around the anus require medical consultation. External hemorrhoids can be itchy or painful but may not cause other symptoms.

To relieve hemorrhoid symptoms, there are five natural remedies available.

While there are no effective alternative treatments for hemorrhoids other than those prescribed by a doctor, there are various measures that you can take to alleviate the unpleasant sensations they cause. It is important to note that relying solely on self-treatment and avoiding medical attention may have adverse effects on your health. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor if you experience hemorrhoid symptoms.

1. Increasing your dietary fiber intake

Studies have shown that fiber can help soften and solidify stool, making it easier to pass and reducing symptoms like itching, discomfort, and pain. You can increase your fiber intake by consuming beans, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and flaxseeds. A daily intake of 25-30 grams of fiber along with sufficient water intake is recommended.

2. Bioflavonoids

Bioflavonoids are a group of natural plant compounds found in citrus fruits like lemons and oranges. These compounds have the ability to stabilize and strengthen veins and capillaries, reduce inflammation, and alleviate symptoms of hemorrhoids, such as bleeding, pain, and discomfort. However, it is important to consult a doctor before consuming citrus fruits containing Sepridin, one of the primary bioflavonoids, as it may interfere with blood pressure and anticoagulants.

3. Butcher's Broom

For generations, this plant has been utilized as a traditional treatment for hemorrhoids. It helps to narrow the veins in the anus and smooth the muscles in their walls. A study conducted on 124 participants reported that 75% of them found relief from symptoms when using the extract of the plant externally or by drinking the tea made from it. The tea has a bitter taste and can be made by adding one teaspoon of the serum to hot water and waiting for it to settle for 10–15 minutes. Before using Butcher's Broom, a medicinal plant, to treat high blood pressure, benign prostate enlargement, or depression, it is recommended to consult a doctor as it may interact with certain medications.

4. French pine bark extract

According to research, French pine bark extract contains flavonoid compounds, catechins, proanthocyanidins, and phenolic acids which possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. French pine bark extract has been proven effective in treating hemorrhoids when applied externally for seven days. In particular, postpartum women who experienced hemorrhoids benefited from using pine bark extract, with significant symptom reduction after several months of use.
