Firstly, there's no need to cut sugar completely out of your diet, since it's unlikely that you'll stick to it for too long. Instead, you should try and minimize your sugar intake by avoiding letting it become a meal's focal point, and to eat it after protein instead.

This is because consuming protein triggers the release of glucagon, which helps to stabilize hormone levels, meaning that the protein and sugar in your body help to regulate each other.

Recent studies also suggest that we should take this approach one step further, and leave all carbohydrates, including sugar, for last. One study found that eating carbohydrates ten minutes after eating vegetables and protein only produced spikes in glucose levels that were up to 50% lower than when carbohydrates were ingested first, which is a hugely significant difference.

According to the researchers, the effect that eating order has on hormonal levels and post-meal glucose levels is comparable to how certain drugs also regulate glucose. People with diabetes are often told to strictly limit the sugar and carbohydrates they consume. However, this research suggests that simply switching their order could be just as efficient.

This approach could also be very useful for people who want to eat less carbs and sugary foods in general. This is because if you've already loaded up on protein and fiberful vegetables, then you probably won't have that much hunger left for heavy foods such as carbs and desserts.
