Home Remedies for a Sour Stomach

 A sour stomach is a common problem of the gastrointestinal system. It’s a collection of dreadful symptoms and is usually temporary and resolves within a couple of days.

 

 

 

 

A sour stomach usually affects the upper digestive system and may cause symptoms such as regurgitation, nausea, indigestion, abdominal gas, bloating, or a sour metallic taste in the mouth.

Overeating, as well as a high intake of spicy and fatty foods, tea and coffee, carbonated beverages, and irregular eating and sleep patterns, can put you at a higher risk of a sour stomach.

There are some effective and easy-to-follow home remedies to cure a sour stomach. These remedies provide quick relief from the queasiness, discomfort, bloating and pain that a sour stomach causes. Below are 10 such remedies:

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

You can treat a sour stomach using apple cider vinegar. It provides quick relief from bloating, gas, and excessive belching.

The enzymes in it are beneficial for improving digestive health. Furthermore, its acidic nature helps kill harmful bacteria in the digestive tract and restores the stomach’s pH to a normal level.

1. Mix 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water.
2. Add some raw honey, if you wish.
3. Drink it before each meal to prevent a sour stomach.

2. Ginger

Another great home remedy for a sour stomach is ginger. It helps to alleviate bloating, gas, and nausea. The compounds in ginger, known as gingerols, help to reduce inflammation and irritation in the stomach. Ginger also stimulates digestive juices and the flow of enzymes that aid the digestion process.

• When you’re suffering from a sour stomach, ginger tea will help. To make this tea, put 1 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger in a cup and pour in boiling water. Cover, let it steep for around 10 minutes and strain it. Drink it 20 minutes before each meal. 
• Another option is to add 2 teaspoons of ginger and 1 teaspoon of honey to a cup of warm water and drink it twice a day. 
• A third option is to add ½ teaspoon of dry ginger powder to 1 cup of buttermilk. Mix it well and drink this concoction a few times each day. 

3. Baking Soda

As it’s a natural antacid, baking soda neutralizes stomach acid that causes heartburn and indigestion, which in turn provides quick relief from the symptoms of a sour stomach.

1. Stir ½ teaspoon of baking soda into half a glass of water.
2. Drink this solution to neutralize the acid in your stomach.
3. Repeat every 4 hours, if needed.

Caution: If you have high blood pressure, don’t take baking soda as it contains sodium.

4. Charred Toast

The char on the toast helps absorb the toxins from your digestive system that are causing a sour stomach. As the toxins are absorbed, you’ll start to feel better.

Make 2 whole-wheat burnt pieces of toast and eat them slowly. You can have the toast alongside some cold milk, water, or a cup of green tea.

Note: Avoid white bread toast, as this can be harmful to your gut bacteria.

5. Fennel

Fennel can help prevent gastrointestinal problems and keep your gut microbiota healthy. It’s also antispasmodic, which means it can provide relief from any kind of stomach pain. It even reduces gas and nausea caused by an upset stomach.

• Slightly crush 2 teaspoons of fennel seeds and add it to 2 cups of water. Bring the water to a boil, then remove it from the heat and let it steep for 5 minutes. Strain the tea, and drink while warm. 
• Another option is to dry roast, grind, and sieve a few tablespoons of fennel seeds. Take ½ a teaspoon of this powder along with water after eating a meal. 

6. Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe vera, being rich in anti-inflammatory properties, helps soothe inflammation and irritation in your stomach and intestinal lining. This, in turn, reduces sour stomach if the cause is acid reflux or peptic ulcer.

Also, since it’s an effective laxative, aloe vera is good for the digestion process.

1. Blend 2 tablespoons of freshly extracted aloe vera gel with 1 cup of water or sugar-free orange juice in a blender until smooth.
2. Drink the juice once a day until your symptoms have improved.

7. Chamomile Tea

Its anti-inflammatory nature helps the stomach muscles relax, which can reduce pain and improve the digestion process. It also lowers gastric acidity.

• Put 1-2 teaspoons of dried chamomile flowers in a cup and pour boiling water in. Cover and allow to steep for 5 minutes. Strain, add a little honey and drink it. 
• Alternatively, if you’re using chamomile teabags pour water over the bag, cover it and leave it to steep for 5 minutes. Remove the teabag, add some honey, and drink. 

8. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal can soak up the harmful acids and gases that accumulate in your gut. This, in turn, provides relief from indigestion, gas, and a bloated stomach.
• One hour before eating your meal, take 1 capsule of activated charcoal with a glass of water. After finishing the meal, drink another glass of water.
• Another option is to mix ½ teaspoon of activated charcoal powder in a glass of water and have it before eating a meal. 

9. Bananas

Bananas are a food that you can eat whenever you suffer from a sour stomach or other stomach issues. They soothe the intestinal walls and minimize irritation from gastric acid. Furthermore, the high levels of potassium in bananas work as a natural antacid, thus neutralizing the stomach’s pH.

Eat a banana before or after your meals. You can eat 2-3 bananas a day. For the best results, sprinkle cinnamon powder on the banana before eating it.

10. Yogurt

Being gentle on your stomach, it’s easy to digest. Plus, it provides energy and nutrition to the body.

Yogurt containing live active cultures is particularly good for relieving digestive issues as it helps balance the gut bacteria that aid in digestion.

Additional Tips

• Avoid foods that are fatty and spicy. 
• Avoid eating large, heavy meals. Stick to small meals, several times a day.
