Never Buy These Foods From the Supermarket!

The obsession with living a healthy life has made us memorize a list of forbidden foods: soda, chocolate bars, chips, to name but a few. However, even those foods that look harmless can actually be really bad for our bodies, so it’s vital that we rethink what we think we know about healthy food.

Below is a list of foods which it is better to stay away from while doing your grocery shopping.

1. Crab Sticks
Foods to Avoid

These are a popular and cheap option for many salads but, unfortunately, they don’t really have anything to do with crabs apart from their name. Crabs sticks consist of mashed fillets of white fish which is sometimes substituted with starch, gluten, or egg whites. They are also full of sugar, coloring, flavoring, and flavor intensifiers, including MSG which causes addiction.

Apart from the obvious risk of becoming overweight from nutritional supplements, there is also the hidden risk of food poisoning. Crab sticks are sold not only frozen, but also chilled, meaning that there’s a serious risk that the rules applied to keep this product safe to consume are being violated.

2. Fish in Plastic Packages

Even though this type of fish may be very tasty, it has a huge disadvantage – a very short shelf life. Therefore, brine has to be added in order to extend the life of the fish. If brine is used, there’s a good chance that hexamethylenetetramine was added to it. This chemical is prohibited in many countries.

3. Smoked Foods
Foods to Avoid

Smoked foods are popular all over the world, but there are many debates about how safe they are to consume. There are traditional smoking methods which work as a natural conservant and can extend shelf life, and then there are cheaper methods called “liquid smoke” which are extremely doubtful.

The harmful flavor intensifiers, formaldehyde, and phenols are often not mentioned on the packaging. Furthermore, stale foods are often hidden by the flavorings. Therefore, if you just cannot resist the taste of smoked fish or chicken, choose the products with the signs of natural smoking methods – thread marks, hook marks, and bar marks on the products.

4. Gummy Bears

These bright sweets are extremely popular among adults and children. However, the ingredients of modern gummy bears are a far cry from the classic.

Natural pectin is often substituted with gelatin from pigs, and the beautiful colors are usually made with synthetic coloring and flavor intensifiers. Furthermore, some manufacturers use sulfur dioxide as a preservative and they don’t always mention it on the package. If taken in high doses, this can cause severe allergies.

5. Black Olives
Foods to Avoid

Entirely black olives do not exist – ripe olives usually have a brown or dark violet color. Therefore, black olives in cans are actually green olives that have been dyed using special nutrients – most of the time with ferrous gluconate. This dye is not dangerous when consumed in small amounts, but there’s definitely nothing healthy about it.

6. Frosting

We’re used to associating the word “frosting” with something shiny, chocolatey, and delicious. Cocoa, milk, butter, sugar – these are the standard ingredients for making chocolate frosting.

However, manufacturers often use a different kind of frosting to cover their cookies, jelly beans, and marshmallows. It looks much better and the colors are more beautiful, but the ingredients used to make it are very bad. Food coloring, synthetic flavor intensifiers, and other chemicals are used to make it.

7. Red Beans
Foods to Avoid

Red beans can be extremely harmful if they are cooked the wrong way. If you don’t boil them for long enough, they can be poisonous as there are a lot of natural toxins in them. In order to “disarm” red beans, you should soak them in water for a few hours and then boil them for at least one hour.

8. Grapes

Grapes should be eaten right after they’ve been picked as they have an extremely short shelf life. Of course, manufacturers don’t like this, so they try to extend the shelf life and improve the appearance of the product by using anti-oxidants. Therefore, if you buy grapes that don’t spoil within a few days, it means that they have been put through some sort of chemical treatment.
