15 Ways You Can Walk 10,000 Daily Steps...Without Training

There's nothing better for your health than regular walking. Yet did you know that we are supposed to walk five miles a day to stay healthy? This amounts to around 10,000 steps, yet, in 2010, research on Americans' walking habits found that the average step count was only 5,000 per day. Even those who wear fitness trackers are only averaging 8,000.
So, is 10,000 steps too hard a goal to reach? Actually, it's very easy and you don't need to start a new training regime or anything like that. All you need to do is add these 15 things to your routine and you'll get your 5 miles without even thinking about it. I couldn't believe how effective this list was for me. Now, I'm sharing these great ideas with you.

1. Dance around the house when your favorite song comes on the radio.
walking, exercise,
Dancing really makes you feel good, so why not pop your favorite feel-good record on when no one is around and let the music lead you around the room. One song will increase your count by around 400 steps.
2. Get off the bus a stop too soon.
walking, exercise,
Of course, you need to take the transport when you live far away from work and the shops, but you don't need to get off at the perfect stop. Instead, get off a stop early and stretch your legs for a few minutes. If you put some pace into it, you could even be hitting 1,260 steps, in just 15 minutes.
3. Walk and talk.
walking, exercise,
This is basically why mobile telephones were invented, so get using them properly! Instead of sitting in a comfy chair while doing a bit of chin-wagging, stroll along the street. A half-hour chat will add 1,800 steps to your count.
4. Park further away from your destination than usual.
walking, exercise,
Let everybody else fight over the best parking spaces because from now on you're going to pick the worst! For every extra minute it takes you to walk to where you to go, you'll be adding 84 steps to your daily count.
5. Park between the places you wish to go to.
walking, exercise,
For the same 84 steps per minute, instead of taking the car from one store to the next, why not park somewhere between the places you are visiting? Then the minutes will really clock up, and you'll hardly be missing any time at all.
6. Shun the elevator, take the stairs.
walking, exercise,
One step on a flight of stairs is worth much more than a regular step. So, you can boost your numbers in no time by eschewing the sweaty and full elevator for the childish pleasure of taking the stairs. Each flight of stairs counts as around 38 steps.
7. Mow the grass, or do some raking.
walking, exercise,
We all know that chores are best done today, and this is as true for the garden as it is for the bathroom. So get into the habit of giving the garden 15 minutes attention every day. A bit of mowing, a bit of raking, it all makes a difference to your health. By making 120 steps a minute you'll soon give yourself a massive 1,800 step boost.
8. Go around the supermarket an extra time before you pay.
walking, exercise,
Supermarkets today are so labyrinthine that you're bound to have forgotten something. Therefore, before you go to the check-out counter, what's the harm in taking another tour around the shop? By taking 67 steps a minute you could wrap up an easy 600 steps or so.
9. Pick the next nearest bathroom.
walking, exercise,
If you visit the nearest lavatory just around the corner from where you are, you'll not be getting much of a walk. But it would be so easy to go to the next one, even if it's a floor above or below you. This could give you an extra 200 steps, plus 80 for the stairs. You see how these numbers are slowly building up?!
10. Don't sit down for the whole lunch break, go window shopping!
walking, exercise,
Take it easy as you browse the latest high-street deals, by clocking up around 61 steps per minute. This'll give you around 1,200 steps to add to your total.
11. Get a dog, and go for walkies.
walking, exercise,
A simple 15-minute trek with your little friend will both do you a world of good. This'll give you some 1,000 steps.
12. Don't text or email when you could just walk over to talk to someone.
walking, exercise,
You could get an easy 61 steps by strolling over to someone at work and asking them that question you were about to email.
13. Do some vacuuming.
walking, exercise,
Vacuuming is actually quite a satisfying little activity (or is it just me?). Amazingly, this chore will take about 94 steps a minute. That 10,000 is now beginning to look like nothing!
14. Take in a round of mini-golf
walking, exercise,
Golf is the perfect sport to enjoy. You'll hardly even notice you are walking. Mini-golf is something you can even do with kids or your partner. You'll be surprised at how much fun you'll have retrieving all the loose balls you messed up! This will add around 91 steps per minute, so take your sweet time!
15. Give the car a good washing
walking, exercise,
This is a chore that will really make a difference. In 15 minutes of hard scrubbing, your step count will surprisingly be revved up with a massive 1,000 steps.
That's your 10,000 steps right there! I bet you hardly even noticed. Do you have any other ideas about how you and other people can get used to walking during the day?
