4 Ways to Tie Your Laces for Foot Pain Relief

Many individuals are hesitant to experiment with different shoelace techniques, sticking to what they learned in their youth or the laces that came with their shoes. However, not all feet are the same shape, and they change over time, leading to various issues. Surprisingly, the way you tie your shoelaces can have a significant impact on these problems. This helpful guide will teach you how to tie your laces based on the specific issue you're experiencing, allowing you to alleviate pain and achieve a perfect fit.

  • Begin by threading the lace from outside into the hole nearest your big toe. For illustrative purposes, let's refer to this as "hole number 1."
  • If there is a central hole closer to your toes, pass through any leftover length of lace through it. If no such hole exists, proceed to the next step.
  • Thread any remaining length of lace into hole number 2 and leave it there.
  • Take hold of the end of the string that you previously inserted through hole number 1. Skip over hole number 3 located above it, then thread it out through hole number 5.
  • Pass the string into hole number 6, skipping over hole number 8 directly above it, and thread it out through hole number 10.
  • Proceed by passing it into hole number 9 before threading it out again through hole 11. Repeat this pattern with other parts of the lace by passing the lace out through hole 4 and continuing from there.

2. Pain in your big toe

  • Insert one side of your lace into a higher position on an opposite side than where your big toe is located. This will leave some length available for tying up your shoe later on. For demonstration purposes, we will start with utilizing a higher position indicated as 'hole 11.'
  • Thread that part of your lace which remains inside your shoe first going through 'hole 10', followed by 'hole 9 ', then move backwards successively until reaching 'hole 1' which must be situated on an opposing side relative to where your big toe is positioned.
  • Lastly, move diagonally across towards 'hole 12' before threading it inwardly once again.

3. The heel keeps slipping out of your shoe

Take hold of both sides of your lace while inserting them from outside going firstly via holes numbered as one followed immediately thereafter by two ensuring equal lengths are present on either side.
To achieve this, follow these steps: 

1. Take the laces and thread them through diagonal holes 3 and 4. 
2. Once threaded, pull them out through those holes.
3. Repeat the process in a diagonal pattern for holes 6 and 5.
4. Continue threading the laces in this manner until you reach holes 9 and 10.
5. Now, take the string that came out of hole 9 and thread it into hole 11, while taking the string from hole 10 and threading it into hole 12.
6. Finally, thread the string from hole12 out through hole9, and do the same for the string from hole 11 by threading it out through hole 10.

4. For individuals with feet that are wide at the end (at the toes)

  •  Begin by threading one lace from outside to inside through both holes 1 and 2, making sure that each side has an equal length of lace.
  • Then pull the lace from hole 1 out through hole 3, and pull the lace from hole 2 out through hole 4. Follow the same pattern for holes 5 and 6 - pull the lace in holes 5 and in through holes 8 and 7, respectively; then pull the lace in holes 6 and in through holes 9 and 12, respectively.
