Kowloon City: Crowdest Place on Earth!

Kowloon city may be the most cramped place on the face of the earth. This is an ungoverned settlement in Hong Kong which started out as a Chinese military fort. During the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, it became associated with the triads - the Chinese mafia, and had very high rates of postitution, gambling and drugs.

In 1987, the city containted 33,000 residents within an area of 6.5 acres - that is 0.026 square km or 0.0102 square miles - an impossibly tiny area.  It was demolished in 1994, and a tratidional park garden was erected instead - to everyone's relief. Still, some parts are preserved to this day.
