It's Not Just Stress a Masseuse Notices in Your Body

We often turn to massages to ease muscle tension and work through injuries. Yet the hour we spend on the massage table may shed more light about our health than we think. Frequently, masseuses can detect more of our health problems than simply our stress. So, what do your tight knots suggest about your health? Here's a list of things your massage therapist wants you to know:

1. The purses you wear are too big
massage
This can be seen when one side of your body appears tighter than the other. They are also aware on which side of your body you are more inclined to shift your body weight. This generally tends to happen with women who carry their purses predominantly on one shoulder. In this case the glutes, hamstrings and quads tends to be tight and you'll likely also have an unnatural pelvic tilt.
2. You work at a desk for long hours
massage
Sitting at a desk all day can wreck havoc on your body. A massage therapist is able to tell whether you have such a job through various signs including a weaker lower back (this is evidenced by one hip being higher than the other), as well as tight glutes and leg muscles. The shoulders are most likely curved too.
3. Your preferred sleeping position
massage
Massage therapists are able to identify whether you prefer to sleep on your stomach. Sleeping in this position can cause extra strain on the neck and therapists are able to feel the extra tightness that tends to accumulate in the area. Sleeping on your stomach places strain on your back and spine too due to the weight that tends to collapse into the middle of your body. This makes it difficult to maintain a neutral spine position when you are sleeping.
4. You spend a lot of time behind the wheel
massage
Driving for long hours can affect your posture just as much as sitting at your desk all day. Therapists are able to identify this about you due to your far-forward posture and hunched shoulders. You'll likely also report aches in both your back and neck.
5. You're injured
massage
Heat and inflammation are clear signs that indicate an acute injury while a chronic injury is most seen in the form of dehydrated muscles that feel tight. On the other hand, with repetitive motions, tendons and muscles will feel wiry like guitar strings.
6. You're constipated.
massage
Here's something you never thought your massage therapist would be able to identify. If your stomach feels firm to the touch, your therapist would likely know that you are suffering from constipation.

7. You spend too much time on your phone
massage
Looking down at your phone can cause your shoulders to slouch forward. But it doesn't just stop there, chronic texters will find it painful when a massage therapist rubs their shoulders. This is primarily caused by the downward position of your head, which creates an imbalance in the shoulders.
8. You don't drink enough water
massage
If you've booked yourself a massage but haven't drank enough water throughout the day (it is recommended that you consume eight glasses), trigger points in the upper back will feel tender.
9. You feel cold all the time
massage
In colder temperatures, hunching up your shoulders to your ears may feel like the instinctual thing to do. This is easily identifiable by a massage therapist due to the stress that has accumulated in the neck and tops of the shoulders throughout the winter season.
10. Your exercise regime includes a lot of running
massage
A massage therapist can tell whether you run due to the tension and tightness that builds up in your hips. You may also complain about tension at the bottom of your foot. Expect to be stretched in a specific way to ease the pain.
11. Your allergies are flaring
massage
The pressure points around your eyes, forehead, cheeks and jaw will appear tender and inflamed, if you're suffering from allergies. The lymph nodes around the neck and under the armpits will also feel tender and swollen.
12. You may have skin cancer
massage
It may be hard for you to detect skin cancer at the back of your body but your massage therapist can spot such irregularities in the places that you generally can't. Massage therapists have reported oddly shaped spots behind the knees or on the back of the hips, advising their clients to check them out.
