Do you live by yourself? Even if the answer to this question is yes, you are definitely not alone. Nowadays there are more people living by themselves than ever before. In fact, it has been estimated that over a quarter of the world’s population live alone. Whether you live alone by choice or by circumstance, there is no doubt that it has its advantages. However, one common disadvantage of living by yourself is the feeling of loneliness. There are, nevertheless, many things which you can do to help keep the loneliness at bay.
1. Don't Shut Your Home Off from the World.
When you live by yourself it can be far too easy to shut yourself into your own little world. This can be fun, of course, but it can also magnify any insecurities or regrets that you currently have. Opening yourself and your home to the big wide world will help you keep things in perspective and remind you that even if you feel alone sometimes, you are not.
Therefore, it's important that your throw open your curtains every day to let the light shine in, open the door and say good morning to your neighbors, and if you have an outdoor area (even if it's just a small balcony), sit on it occasionally and watch the world go by.
2. Make Daily Rituals that Underscore the Joys of Living Alone.
Think deeply about what it is that you love about living by yourself and try to find ways to indulge in it. If it just so happens to be walking around with a face mask on that makes you look like you're in a horror movie, go for it. If it's eating straight out of an ice cream tub or drinking straight from a carton of juice, then go for it.
3. Pets are Important
Animals are great companions to talk to. However, for those of you who, for some reason or another, cannot keep a cat or a dog, don't forget about smaller pets such as fish or song birds. It's this interaction with another living thing which can help stave of loneliness.
4. Entertain More Often
One of the best ways to not feel lonely when you live alone is to occasionally fill up your house with people you like and find interesting. Remember that you don't need to have a dinner party - just inviting some friends over to play games is a great way to bring conversation and laughter into your house.
5. Try New Things
It's difficult to feel lonely when you're trying to learn a new skill, practice your hobby or trying out a new recipe. When it comes to staving off loneliness, one of the most productive ways to do so is to occupy your time with things that feel enriching, exciting and creative.
6. Know Your Loneliness Triggers and how to Fight Them
One of the best things about living with someone is having a person to welcome you when you get home from a long day at work, as well as talk to about your day. Obviously, this isn't possible when you live by yourself. Therefore, to combat this, schedule a call with a good friend or send a text to your relative to ask her how he/she is. It might be a lack of connection which makes you feel lonely, or it might be something else.
Try to identify what it is that makes you feel sad and lonely so you can find your own ways to combat it. For example, if it was when you were bored, make sure you have a hobby and some supplies around you can work on.
