Once considered “junk food”, pizzas these days can be found on the menu at many gourmet restaurants. By using quality ingredients and mixing various toppings, this previous fast-food dish can now be a desirable delicacy. The best thing about it is that you don’t need to go to a fancy restaurant to enjoy this treat at home. These six pizza recipes will make your mouth water, and bring pride to any Italian mother.

Before We Begin – Classic Pizza Dough Recipe:

What makes each pizza unique is the toppings and sauces, making this dough an all-around base for your pizzas.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Preparation:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the water, sugar, salt, oil, and yeast. Allow 10 minutes for the yeast to activate.
  2. Add the flour and start kneading the dough with your hands. If it is too hard, add some more water.
  3. Form the dough into a large ball and remove it from the bowl. Continue kneading the dough on a lightly-floured surface.
  4. Coat the bowl with a little bit of oil and put the dough back in. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes.

1. Melon, Ricotta, and Pine Nuts

A summer specialty, this pizza is a little sweet and nutty. Combining one of the summer’s best fruits – the melon, with pine nuts and ricotta cheese, plus the light tang of fresh arugula. It can be a delicious dish, as well as a desert.

Ingredients:

  • Premade dough
  • 1 cup grated ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup small melon slices
  • ¼ cup fresh arugula (or basil)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons roasted pine nuts
  • Salt (to taste)

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 570°F (300°C)
  2. Flatten the dough on a floured surface into a circular shape.
  3. Mix the honey and ricotta cheese in a bowl.
  4. Sprinkle the cheese on the dough, and add the melon pieces.
  5. Place the dough on a baking sheet and bake for 8-12 minutes, until the dough is golden, and the cheese fully melts.
  6. Remove the pizza from the oven, sprinkle the pine nuts and arugula leaves, and add a pinch of salt.
  7. Let it cool for 3 minutes and enjoy.

2. Beetroot, Kale, and Goat Cheese

This pizza swaps the classic tomato sauce with a rich beetroot sauce, upgrades the parmesan cheese with a mild goat feta, and combines with kale – a superfood.

Ingredients:

  • Premade dough
  • 2 cups finely chopped kale
  • 1½ cups grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup beetroot sauce
  • 1.5oz goat feta cheese (50 grams)
  • Beetroot Sauce:
  • 1 cup chopped beetroot
  • ½ cup crushed walnuts
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • Salt (to taste)

Preparation:

Beetroot Sauce:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C)
  2. Place the diced beetroot in tinfoil and wrap it (to prevent burning).
  3. Bake the wrapped beetroot for 50 minutes, or until the beetroot softens and juice starts pouring out.
  4. Remove the beetroots and blend all the ingredients, except the olive oil.
  5. As you blend, slowly add the olive oil until all of the ingredients combine.

Pizza:

  1. Preheat the oven to 395°F (200°C)
  2. Flatten the dough on a floured surface into a circular shape.
  3. Bake the dough as is for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Remove the dough from the oven and apply the beetroot sauce, add the chopped kale, and sprinkle the goat cheese and parmesan.
  5. Re-place the dough into the oven and bake for another 10-20 minutes, until the dough is golden, and the cheese fully melts.
  6. Remove from the oven, let it cool for 3 minutes and enjoy.

3. Turkish Style Ground Beef Pizza

This Mediterranean take on the Italian pizza is a colorful and flavorful combination of seasoned ground beef and egg.

Ingredients:

  • Premade dough
  • 1lbs (500 grams) ground beef / lamb
  • ¼ cup chopped dried tomatoes in oil
  • 4 eggs (optional)
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 pureed pickled cherry peppers
  • Salt & pepper (to taste)

Preparation:

  1. In a skillet, fry an onion with a tablespoon of olive oil on medium heat for 4 minutes, until it softens. Add the meat and garlic, and season with salt and pepper. Turn the heat up and start breaking the meat into smaller bits until it browns.
  2. Stir in the dried tomatoes, pepper puree, and cumin. Continue stirring for a minute.
  3. Preheat the oven to 445°F (230°C)
  4. Flatten the dough on a floured surface into 4 smaller circles.
  5. Place the 4 circles on a baking sheet and bake in the bottom part of the oven for 2 minutes.
  6. Remove the dough from the oven, and evenly spread the meat to cover most of each circle. Brush olive oil around the edges.
  7. Crack an egg in the center of each circle, and then bake in the upper shelf of the oven for 6 minutes, until the dough is golden, and the egg solidifies and turns white.
  8. Remove the pizza from the oven, sprinkle the parsley, and serve hot.

4. Savoy Cabbage and Sunroot

This fascinating and delicious combination, topped with pecorino and Emmental cheese, will awaken the pallet of anyone who eats it, sending them to a place of sheer gastronomical bliss.

Ingredients:

  • Premade dough
  • 2.2lbs (1kg) sunroot
  • 1lbs (500 grams) savoy cabbage, chopped
  • 1½ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup grated Emmental cheese
  • 1 large onion, finely sliced
  • 1 lemon, halved
  • 3 tablespoons grated pecorino cheese
  • 1 tablespoon thyme, chopped
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt & pepper (to taste)

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C)
  2. Fill a large bowl with water, squeeze the lemon into it, peel the sunroots and place them in the bowl, then remove and cut each one into medium-thick slices, put them back in the lemon water (to prevent browning).
  3. Remove half of the sunroot slices, pat them dry and place them in a skillet. Cover the roots in milk and bring to a boil, then lower the heat and slow cook for 15 minutes.
  4. Fish out the sunroots, and put them in a blender. Add a ½ cup of milk and blend until it becomes a paste.
  5. Put the paste back in the skillet and cook over medium heat while stirring for 3 minutes. Add salt and pepper.
  6. In a deep pot, heat up 2 tablespoons of olive oil and fry the onion on a low heat until it softens (approx. 7 minutes). Add the Savoy cabbage and keep stirring for 12 minutes.
  7. Remove the rest of the sunroot slices, pat them dry, and fry on medium heat with 2 tablespoons of olive oil until they turn crispy.
  8. Flatten the dough on a floured surface into 2 circles.
  9. Evenly spread the paste on each circle, and add the cabbage, and fried sunroot, then top with Emmental cheese.
  10. Place the dough on a baking sheet and bake for 5-10 minutes, until the dough is golden, and the cheese fully melts.
  11. Remove the pizza from the oven, sprinkle with pecorino cheese and thyme.
  12. Let it cool for 3 minutes and enjoy.

5. Peaches, Mozzarella, and Cherry Tomatoes

If you love your cheese, you know that burrata cheese is considered to be the “queen of cheese”, and has a wonderful and juicy texture. It can be a great replacement for mozzarella if you want to enjoy a real treat.

  • Premade dough
  • 1lbs (500g) mozzarella or buratta cheese
  • 2 cups fresh corn
  • 2 cups cherry tomatoes
  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup fresh basil
  • 2 peaches, sliced
  • Extra-virgin olive oil

Preparation:

  1. Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C)
  2. Flatten the dough on a floured surface into a circular shape. Flatten as thinly as you can without ripping the dough.
  3. Brush the dough with a teaspoon of olive oil and place large slices of mozzarella/burrata on top.
  4. Spread the corn, peach slices, and cherry tomatoes, and finally top with parmesan cheese.
  5. Place the dough on a baking sheet and bake for 8-12 minutes, until the dough is golden, and the cheese fully melts.
  6. Remove the pizza from the oven and top with basil leaves.
  7. Let it cool for 3 minutes and enjoy.

6. Raspberry Jam, Candied Pecans, and Brie

Comfort food deluxe. This pizza goes nuts and takes the traditional cheese and jam pastry and adds fresh raspberry and crunchy candied pecans, that go along perfectly with the nutty taste of the brie.

Ingredients:

  • Premade dough
  • 3oz (80g) brie, thinly sliced.
  • 1 cup fresh raspberries
  • ⅓ cup raspberry jam
  • Candied pecans
  • 1 teaspoon rosemary, finely chopped
  • Honey

To make candied pecans:

  • 1 cup pecan nuts
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon powder

Preparation:

Candied Pecans:

  1. In a small pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sugar, cinnamon and pecans.
  2. Stir for 4-5 minutes until the sugar caramelizes.
  3. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

Pizza:

  1. Preheat the oven to 445°F (230°C)
  2. Flatten the dough on a floured surface into a circular shape.
  3. Brush the dough with olive oil and place brie slices on top. In the spaces between slices, put dollops of jam, and add half of the fresh raspberries and rosemary.
  4. Place the dough on a baking sheet and bake for 8-12 minutes, until the dough is golden, and the cheese fully melts.
  5. Remove the pizza from the oven, drizzle with honey and sprinkle with the pecans and the remaining raspberries.
  6. Let it cool for 3 minutes and enjoy.
