Diana Beltran Herrera started sculpting wildlife from paper in 2012, so it is hardly surprising that she is an absolute master at her craft today. At first glance, the artist’s work can be mistaken for pictures of actual living birds and butterflies. Only a closer inspection reveals that these bright and colorful creatures are actually crafted from paper.
According to Herrera, research is the key part of her work process. She spends hours collecting images and information about her subjects and a week planning the design of a single bird. It’s important to her that the sculptures are not only beautiful but also realistic and even educational. This is the exact reason why Herrera frames many of her paper birds inside giant postage stamps. This allows her to document their origins in a fun and playful way.
