O Danny Boy: A Musical Presentation

Danny Boy is perhaps one of the most famous ballads, as well as traditional Irish songs. It was written in 1910 by lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly, and sang to the tune of 'Londonderry Air'. However, it was vocalist Elsie Griffin who made it one of the most popular songs of the early 20th century.

There are many interpretations of the song, most seem to think it is about a letter from a parent to a son going off to war (or taking part in the Irish uprising). Click on the play button below and listen to this gorgeous, sweet and sad song as you scroll down and read the lyrics.
