The Many Gorgeous Works of Japanese Artist Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 and raised in Matsumoto, Japan. She began her foray into art culture at a young age. In the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts, she was trained to create paintings in the traditional Japanese style called nihonga. Her creativity as well as her need to break from the norm was further forged by a traumatic childhood, caused by her parent’s turbulent relationship. She quickly grew frustrated with traditional Japanese art and sought inspiration in European and American art. She developed a fascination for the avant-garde style as well as abstract impressionism.

Her exhibitions, even today at age 91, focus on feminism, minimalism and the environment, and seek to bring brightness and color to every exhibit. Many of her pieces feature polka dots. She attributes this to the features of the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth, beautiful dots in this vast universe that help life thrive. In 2017, the Yayoi Kusama Museum was opened in Tokyo, Japan and exhibits a great many of her works, spanning the entirety of her 60+ year career. Let the art of this esteemed artist fill your life with fun polka dots and vibrant color!
