Before the Roman empire developed, the light of the world was in Greece. Philosophy, natural sciences, literature, and even mythology - were all very developed in Greece early on. So it is little surprise that when the Romans came into power they used a lot of the knowledge first discovered by the Greeks, including a large part of their mythology. The philosophical and political ideas of the Greeks had a particularly strong influence on the formation of the Roman Empire.
