Some educational apps are more tailored towards high school students, some for soon-to-be college graduates, and others are more apt for those who provide an education, or those who are still hungry for knowledge long after the summer holidays have started.

1. Udacity (Free/$200)

Udacity offer free online courses. There are hundreds of different topics available, and you can even pay $200 for a nanodegree service that gives you feedback from professionals, coaching, and a verified certification.

2. Brainscape (Free/Various Subscriptions Rates)

This app claims that you can double your learning speed by using flashcards. Brainscape paces the repetition of each concept perfectly, so that you’ll retain knowledge much more effectively. Rate how well you know each concept, and Brainscape will determine when to give you another quiz. This app is free, but if you want a pro subscription, you’ll be charged $10 per month, $30 semiannually, or $36 per year. You can also buy a lifetime subscription of $80. A subscription will give you access to premium features such as bookmarks, browse mode, card reversibility, and the ability to create flashcards without adverts.

3. Gradeproof (Free/ $10 Per Month)

Most of us don’t have a personal editor to show us how we can improve our writing one sentence at a time. This is where Gradeproof comes in. This app offers concrete ways to improve your writing style, check for originality, and identify complex grammatical issues that other word processors might miss. While the app is totally free, you’ll have to upgrade to the $10-per-month premium to unleash the full power of this pocket writing coach.

4. EdX (Free)

Higher education is no longer just available to college students. This app makes it possible for anyone with a smartphone to learn from reputable institutions such McGill and MIT, and even maybe earn a certificate while they’re at it. With this app, you can tune into online lectures, complete assignments at your own pace, and take quizzes, all without the added worry of student loans.

5. WolframAlpha ($3)

This app uses a vast collection of algorithms and data to answer questions about any query you might have. The knowledge engine is very accurate, getting its answers from a variety of sources. It also provides you with instructions as to how it arrived at the answer.

6. TED

This app gives you access to more than 1,700 TED Talks videos, introducing you to intriguing presentations and revolutionary ideas from tech geniuses, education radicals, musical legends, and business gurus to name but a few.

7. Khan Academy

Educating yourself can be expensive, but thankfully Khan academy provides more than 4,000 free downloadable videos so that you can brush up on whole range of topics such as art, history, math, and science. You can also track your progress and unlock achievements.

Learning another language isn’t easy. This app gives you the opportunity to translate real-world texts in your desired language of choice – German, Spanish, French, Italian, Brazilian. It can translate web pages and other documents into many languages. It also offers a number of language courses at all levels.
