Walk into any cosmetic store and you’ll find tons of shelves filled with countless beauty products whose sole purpose is to take care of one of the most important areas of your body: the skin on your face. All the products you’ll find there are the results of years of developments, so don’t be surprised to find out that they aren’t cheap and that their ingredients list is very long and confusing.

But, if you take yourself to the grocers, or purchase complementary products for the many raw ingredients you already have at home, you will find it much cheaper to make face masks yourself. How can this be done and what treatment is appropriate for which problem? The answers to these questions will be found in the 7 recipes below, which will help you make wonderful face masks that’ll have you falling in love with yourself again!

1. Wrinkle treatment

No one likes to see wrinkles on their face, and it's impossible to completely eliminate this phenomenon, but it's certainly possible to delay the appearance of wrinkles and give the skin a young and glowing look even as you age. This face mask does just that, and you'll be surprised at how easy it is to make it.

face masks

Ingredients:

• 2 tsp. petroleum jelly (Vaseline)
• 1 tbs. almond oil
• 1 egg yolk
• 1 tsp. honey
• 1 ripe avocado, mashed

Instructions:

1. Warm up the Vaseline for a few seconds until softened. This can be done in the microwave.

2. After heating, add the honey and stir until well mixed.

3. Add the remaining ingredients to the mixture and make sure to add the egg yolk last.

4. Mix all the ingredients until the paste is uniform and has no lumps. Transfer the paste to a jar or similar container that can be closed tightly and shake for about a minute. Wait about 5 minutes and the mask is ready to use.

How to use it:

• Wash and dry the face well, and then apply the mask all over – it’s best to do this over a sink or towel to avoid a mess.
• Massage the mixture into the skin in a gentle circular motion for a minute or two.
• Wait 20-30 minutes and then remove the mask with a damp cloth and wash your face well.

2. Clean out the toxins and reduce puffiness

The caffeine in the ground coffee beans that you’ll use to make this mask helps treat puffiness, while the antioxidants in the cocoa powder contribute to cleansing the skin and softening the signs of aging. The yogurt or sour cream you use will finish the job by moisturizing and polishing the skin.

face masks

Ingredients:

• 2 tbs. ground coffee
• 2 tbs. natural cocoa powder
• 1 tbs. honey
• 3 tbs. natural yogurt or sour cream

Instructions:

1. In a lidded jar, mix all the ingredient until you reach a smooth and even consistency.

How to use it:

• Spread the mask over the skin evenly – it’s best to do this over a sink or towel to avoid a mess.
• Wait 10 minutes, then wash your face while massaging the skin to exfoliate and scrub off any dead skin cells.
• If you have some mask left over, you can add some water and use it to soften the skin on other parts of your body.

3. Treat reddened skin (Rosacea)

Cold and dry weather causes the skin on our face to become red and dry, symptoms that are also typical of rosacea, a skin disorder that causes blood vessels to expand. In both cases, the next face mask, which makes use of apple cider vinegar and oats, can be used to treat the issue. Apple cider vinegar helps to balance the skin's PH, and oats relieve irritation and help restore damaged skin.

face masks

Ingredients:

• 1 ½ tbs. dry oats
• 2 tbs. natural yogurt
• 1 tbs. apple cider vinegar
• 1 tbs. honey
• 1 cup strong green tea (it’s recommended to use 2 teabags when brewing)

Instructions

1. Start by mixing the first 4 ingredients in a bowl and then add 3 tbs. of the warm green tea (unsweetened)

2. Mix well for about a minute or two and then add more tea until you reach the consistency of a thick paste.

3. Whatever is left of the tea can be drunk.

How to use it:

• Rinse your face with lukewarm water and dry it gently with a soft towel.
• Apply the mask- it’s best to do this over a sink or towel to avoid a mess
• Wait about 10 to 15 minutes, remove the mask with a damp cloth, and rinse the face with lukewarm water.
• Gently pat the face with a dry towel
• Use the mask twice a week to effectively treat reddened skin.

4. Acne treatment and skin nourishment

Honey is a powerful and natural anti-bacterial substance, so it's not surprising to discover that it's a common ingredient in most homemade face masks and skin care products. When adding acne fighting, B vitamin-rich nutritional yeast to it, you get a perfect face mask to treat all types of acne.

face masks

Ingredients:

• 1 cup of strong chamomile tea (it’s recommended to use 2 teabags when brewing)
• 1 tbs. of honey
• 1 tbs. nutritional yeast

Instructions:

1. First, boil water and make a cup of chamomile tea, unsweetened. Wait for the water to cool completely and then continue to prepare the mask.

2. In a bowl, mix the honey and yeast and then gradually add the chamomile tea until you get a paste that is thick and sticky enough to rub on your face.

How to use it:

• Apply a thin layer onto cleansed and dried skin - it’s best to do this over a sink or towel to avoid a mess
• After about 20 minutes, wash the face with lukewarm water and gently pat the skin to dry and remove whatever is left of the mask.

5. Treat flaky sensitive skin and nourish it

This is one of the easiest natural face masks to make and consists of two ingredients in total. Brown sugar, because of its texture and chemical properties, is a great natural material for peeling and cleansing the skin, and coconut oil, which moisturizes the skin and provides nutrients that help soften and soothe the skin so it won’t be red and irritated at the end of treatment.

face masks

Ingredients:

• 2 tbs. brown sugar
• 2 tbs. coconut oil

Instructions:

1. Mix the two ingredients in a container until uniformly blended.

How to use it:

• Apply the mask to your face in gentle, circular movements - it’s best to do this over a sink or towel to avoid a mess. Note that this process should lightly scratch and irritate the skin, as long as your movements are gentle and don’t injure the skin, there is nothing to worry about.
• Wait about 10 minutes, then rinse your face with lukewarm water and gently wipe off the remaining mask with a towel.

6. Rehabilitate dry skin and other damaging winter effects.

The cold winter months can damage our facial skin in many different ways. Using the following face mask can get quite messy if you’re not careful, but it's rich in so many antioxidants, vitamins, moisturizers and antibacterial ingredients that the mess is definitely worth the trouble.

face masks

Ingredients:

• ½ an avocado – mashed well with no lumps
• 1 tsp. olive oil
• 1 tsp. aloe vera gel

Instructions:

1. Mix all ingredients in a container until a uniform mixture is obtained. Make sure that there are no random lumps of avocado.

How to use it:

• Rinse face with lukewarm water and then dry it gently with a towel. Now apply the mask gently and generously.
• As already mentioned, this face mask can cause quite a mess, so we recommended applying it to your face while lying down. After a few minutes, the mask will harden and stick to the skin.
• After 10 to 15 minutes remove the mask by rinsing the face with lukewarm water and gently patting with a dry towel.

7. Cleansing and reviving for all skin types

Many skin care products, both company and homemade, are adapted to different skin types, but the next mask is suitable for almost every one of us. The base of the mask is antioxidant filled cranberries, and if you can’t find fresh cranberries, frozen or dried mix with a little natural juice will work just fine.

3. Add the oats gradually and stir constantly until you get a thick paste. If necessary add more oats.

4. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes.

How to use it:

• After the face mask has cooled it can be gently applied to a clean face - it’s best to do this over a sink or towel to avoid a mess.
• Wait about 10 minutes and let the mixture dry.
• Then splash a little lukewarm water onto the face and remove the mask using gentle, circular massage movements.
• Finally, wash your face thoroughly and wipe gently with a dry towel.
