How to Make Plaster of Paris-Dipped Silk Flowers

If you happen to enjoy art and sculpture, but lack the talents of the likes of Michelangelo, then I’ve got the solution for you. I’m going to show you how you can make beautiful art pieces with your own bare hands in the comfort of your own home!

All you need is some plaster of Paris, which you can pick up from a home improvement store, and some synthetic flowers, which you’ll find at a dollar store. I’m going to show you how to combine the two to make stunning pieces of sculptural, floral art. Let’s get started:

Plaster of Paris-Dipped Silk Flowers

Paris-Dipped Silk Flowers Recipe

Materials

• Artificial flowers (can be found in arts and craft stores or dollar stores)
• Plaster of Paris
• Large disposable bowl or container
• Water
• Disposable spoon
• Wax paper

Instructions

1. Prepare the silk flowers by trimming the stems off or down, but leave enough stem so that you can dip them in the plaster of Paris.

2. Pour about ¾ cup of plaster of Paris into a container. Add the water incrementally until the liquid reaches a consistency similar to pancake batter.

3. Holding their stems, dip one flower at a time into the mix. Take care to coat each petal and crevice carefully, gently tapping off excess plaster as you do so.

4. Place the coated flowers on wax paper to dry. Repeat the process with the remaining flowers and leave to harden. This should take about 10 minutes.

5. After the flowers have dried, apply a second coat of plaster and allow them to dry overnight.

TIP: Add more definition to the petals using a toothpick to manipulate them before they dry.
