Is the Universal Translator Now a Reality?

There are loads of new inventions coming out every day, and they usually just pass me by. But, once in a while, I hear about something so incredible that I check the calendar to see whether it's not April 1st. And this invention here from Waverly Labs called The Pilot seems to come straight out of science fiction!

The Pilot comprises of a pair of earpieces for two wearers that pick up any sentence spoken in one language, and translates it instantly to another language. This means you can conduct a normal conversation with someone else, even though you don’t understand each other’s language.

At this stage the device will only understand Latinate European languages like English, French, Spanish and Italian. But eventually it will be able to translate hundreds of known languages - in an instant. And since no one can expect to learn more than a couple of languages in a lifetime (in my case less) it is impossible to think of anyone who wouldn’t have use for such a nifty space-age gadget. This truly opens up a whole world of communication.

When released it is expected to retail at $249 to $250. But as the rise in technology has already shown us, prices will come down until the point where we will all have these devices at hand. I can hardly wait. Well done, computer boffins!
