Photos in the Shan Shui Style

Photographer Don Hong-Oai was born in 1929 in the city of Guangzhou, China. At the age of seven, following the sudden death of his parents, he was sent to live in a community in Saigon, Vietnam where he continued to live the rest of his life. Although Don was separated from China at an early age, he grew up to appreciate the delicacy of traditional Chinese landscape painting, a style of painting that was popular in the Song and Yuan Dynasties called shan shui, or 'mountain, river'.

Don's photographs beautifully hark back to the traditional Chinese art and appreciation of landscape and peaceful nature.
