Going the Distance Under the Ice - Incredible!

How far will a sportsmen go to set a world record? If you ask Stig Severinsen of Denmark, the sky's the limit when it comes to setting or breaking world records. Severinsen is a world-class freediver, a form of underwater diving that tests a swimmer's ability to hold their breath, and has set over four world records in his career.

Severinsen is 39-years old, but that does not mean he can't beat the youngest and fittest at their game. He holds the Guinness world record for the longest time anyone has held their breath under water, a whopping 22 minutes! With this acheivement, he broke his previous world record of 20 minutes, but that challenge was carried out while he was submerged in a tank full of sharks!

In his latest daring water challenge, Severinsen swims 250 feet (or 76 meters) under 3 feet of ice in East Greenland. Swimming under freezing cold water is as dangerous as it is daring because the muscles and even brain function can freeze and cease to function, what can cause instantaneous drowning.

Watch as Severinsen breaks an amazing world record of the longest distance swam in below freezing temperature waters!
