What would it feel like, to know nothing but bars and small cages for all your life, and then one day, without explanation, you are introduced to the world? What would you think of the sky, the trees, the very sun? This is what these chimps are experiencing. For the first time, they are set outside, not knowing that this is their new life, that they have finally been allowed to retire from being lab animals. These chimps will have to deal with a new world, new social connections and a new understanding of the space around them. Over 100 government-owned chimpanzees will start a new life when they are retired at Chimp Haven sanctuary in Keithville, La., over the next 12 to 15 months. |
