Life in Oymyakon - the World's Coldest Village

Some new pictures and videos have emerged from the world's coldest permanently-inhabited settlement - the village Oymyakon in the Russian region of Siberia. I really don't know how the residents manage to stay put there, but they do, sometimes braving temperatures as cold as -62°C (-80°F). Take a look at what life is like in this most hostile of environments:

Nevertheless, life in a village cold enough to freeze your eyeballs hasn't stopped.

It's so cold that street vendors don't even need to refrigerate their fish.

With that being said, they need to keep themselves as warm as can be.

Imagine standing about selling fish in this cold.
The village lies in the Oymyakonsky District or Russia's Sakha Republic.

The name Oymakyon means "unfrozen patch of water, where fish spend the winter".

They don't stop the locals from going about their lives, however.
Incredibly, though, summertime temperatures can reach 30 °C (86 °F)

Oymyakon was a stopover for reindeer herders back in the 1920s and 1930s.

The settlement became permanent due to the Soviets forcing the area's nomadic population to put down firm roots.

One positive effect of the cold is that the village looks like a winter wonderland for much of the year.
