The Animal Welfare Institute was founded in 1951, and has sought to alleviate the suffering inflicted upon animals by human beings ever since. In its earlier years, the organization was primarily concerned with animals used for experimental purposes, however its main focus has now shifted to alleviating cruelty in factories used to raise and slaughter cows, pigs and chickens, among other animals.

The Cancer Research Institute is the world’s leading cancer charity. Founded in 1953 with the aim of developing immunologically-based treatments for cancer, the institute is actually a funding body for cancer research, as opposed to conducting research itself. The charity was founded in 1964 by Jeanne Clarke Wood, who was moved by the suffering and deprivation of children on a visit to Guatemala.

Human Rights Watch is a global, non-profit and non-governmental human rights organization that employs roughly 400 people around the globe. Earthjustice started out life in 1971 as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, and changed its name to its current one back in 1997. It also does this on behalf of smaller state and community groups, such as the Friends of the Everglades. It helps out in this way in order to take on corporate interests that could do harm to both the environment and human health.

It is the largest non-profit funder of Parkinson’s disease in the entire world.
