Many a beautiful car is bought and sold via auctions around the world each year, but the cars that you'll find in this list are a cut above the rest. They are among the rarest, most valuable and most prestigious cars ever built, and it goes without saying that they all changed hands with price tags to match. Here are the most expensive classic cars sold via auction during this year to date: 
 
10. 1937 Mercedes Benz 540 K Special Roadster by Sindelfingen

This beautiful car set the record for the most expensive car ever sold at Scottsdale Classic Car Week this year. It's also the third most expensive Mercedes-Benz ever sold at auction. Despite turning 80 years old next year, this car is believed to have traveled just over 10,000 miles since new. 

9. 1932  Bugatti Type 55 Roadster

The car pictured above is the most expensive Bugatti ever sold. It's also the only Type 55 Roadster to see competitive action in the famous Mille Miglia road race, and rumor has it that this very car was used as a personal vehicle by company founder Jean Bugatti. 

 

8. 1933  Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza

This Alfa is the second-most expensive ever sold, as being the second-most expensive prewar car ever sold. It features original "Brianza" bodywork and matching chassis and engine numbers. Further bolstering its collectors' appeal is its racing history. 

7. 1960  Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione

This car finished in 7th place at the 1960 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. It is alloy-bodied, and features original Scaglietti coachwork together with matching numbers. 

6. 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra CSX 2000

This Shelby became the most expensive American car ever sold at public auction when it changed hands earlier this year. It's particularly special as it's the very first Shelby Cobra ever built. During its heyday, it was used as a development, promotional and driver training car, and has been retained by Shelby until this year. 

 
5. 1961  Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider

Numerous examples of this particular model of car have changed hands for over $10 million in the past, however, this particular one is rather special. Not only is it an unrestored car that just happens to have been well-maintained, it has only had three owners from new over the course of 55 years. What's more is that it made a brief appearance in an Oscar-winning feature film starring Sophia Loren. 

4. 1959  Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider Competizione

The sale of this car set a new record for a long wheelbase California Spider, and it became the fourth California Spider to sell for more than $15 million. This alloy-bodied competition car raced at the 1960 edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring race, finishing 5th overall.

Behold the most expensive pre-war car in history, and the eighth most expensive car ever. This 8C is one of only 12 ever built, but despite its extreme rarity, it has covered more than 12,000 miles in the last two decades. 
2. 1955  Jaguar D-Type

Believed to be the only D-Type in existence that still retains its original form, this car was the winner at the 1956 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour race. Its sale this year meant that it became the most expensive British-built car ever sold at auction.

This incredible Ferrari won the 1957 Mille Miglia race with famous driver Wolfgang von Trips at the wheel, then became the very first car to do a lap of the track at Le Mans with an average speed exceeding 200km/h. It is only the second car in history to break the $30 million barrier at auction, and looks like it's worth every penny.
