Botticelli never married and it is popularly believed that he held an unrequited love for a married noble lady, Simonetta Vespucci. She is considered to be his muse for the Birth of Venus and is seen as a recurring character throughout his work. When he died, he asked to be buried at her feet in Florence’s Church of Ognissanti.
