Burano: Italy's Most Colorful Island

Looking at these photos I can’t believe that a place like Burano is real. This tranquil island is bursting with color in the Northern Venetian Lagoon, close to Venice and Murano.

This stunning island is actually an archipelago of 4 islands and there are 5 quarters. Burano is most famous for its colorful landscape with its brightly hued houses. Tourists love visiting the island, and you can get there by boat from Venice in just 45 minutes.

This delightful island is home to 3000 residents, and the main industries are fishing and lace making.  The local women have been making lace since the 1400s and their beautiful handwork is coveted and sold around the world.

If you visit the island, make sure to visit the lace making museum. While nearby Murano is more famous for glass and Venice for masks, the island also partakes in these activities and you can see them being made in local studios. You can also peruse shops and dine at a number of restaurants on the island.

Local legend has it that the bright colors were chosen so that the fishermen could spot their homes from sea. The idea was introduced for more practical reasons: to delineate property. Today if a local would like to paint their house they have to submit forms to the local government, who will recommend several color options, from which residents may choose.

You can also sample the town’s signature fish dish, Risotto de go, and look at pastry shops for the locally baked bussola, a donut-shaped cake. The S-shaped ones are called esse, and are also well-known.

While roaming the islands, you can visit Casa deo Bepi Sua, a shop with a door decorated with a striking geometric design, or see the San Martino Church.
