A DIY Treat: Make a Yummy Brownie Mix In a Mason Jar

Make your own decorative brownie mix in a mason jar with this quick and simple DIY project, and it’s also makes for a perfect as a gift. (And the brownies are delicious!)

The ingredients you’ll need are:

  • 1 cup, 2 tbsp of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup baking cocoa
  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup vanilla or white chips
  • 1/2 cup of chopped pecans
  • A mason jar to hold all of the above


  1. Pour the first ingredient into the jar, pour a layer of half an inch or so of your first ingredient.
  2. Gently shake the jar to straighten the first layer, then pour in a different ingredient. (Make sure each layer is a different color to create a beautiful contrast between layers, as pictured above)
  3. Continue until the jar is 3/4 full, then add the chocolate chips and pecans (for a decorative version that will last longer, avoid the pecans and chocolate chips).
  4. Seal the jar.

If you want to make your own labels, here are the additionally needed ingredients and preparation instructions:

Additional ingredients:

  • 3 eggs
  • 2/3 cup canola oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. In a small bowl, combine flour and salt. In a 1-qt. glass container, layer the flour mixture, brown sugar, sugar, cocoa, chips and pecans. Cover and store in a cool dry place for up to 6 months.Yield: 1 batch (about 4 cups total).
  2. To prepare brownies: In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, oil and vanilla. Add brownie mix; stir until blended.
  3. Spread into a greased 9-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean (do not overbake). Cool on a wire rack. Yield: 16 servings.
